running.

i’m not sure who this person is writing this, but i do know that she is a runner. well, sort of. she has run twice in one week and is LOVING it. who is this person?! and what has she done with rebecca suzanne?!

here’s the story…

a few months ago, a friend of mine started a program called couch to 5K. sounds horrid. running a 5K? yeah right… but the more and more i thought about it, the more i became okay with the idea of getting up off my fat arse and getting active. so, i began to actually USE my gym membership that i’ve been paying $100 a month for only to say that i have one. i was THAT person… yeah, you’ve done it too. you cannot deny.

off to the gym! i stared a measly twice a week routine of walking on the treadmill, hanging out on the elliptical for a while, then pumping some iron on those hydraulic machines. all good stuff right?  but i wasn’t breaking sweat, i wasn’t feeling better, and i wasn’t loosing any weight. so, in a moment of clarity one saturday morning when i should have been at the gym, i decided that i was switching gears. i would begin to run, tomorrow. if you know me well, you know that running and i do not,  in any way, whatsoever, have a friendly relationship. running reminds me of high school gym class and a little thing we called suicides. no need for explanation. since then (we’re talking post high school, which is going on it’s 11th year, i  might add) i’ve always said that i would not run, ever again, unless i was sprinting from base to base OR being chased.

so, here we are. i’m not enrolled in any sort of softball league nor am i in a dating relationship (sprinting from base to base… eh?) and i’m certainly not being chased. at least i don’t think i am…. enter quick glance behind me… yesterday was day two of running and today, i wished to be in the gym plodding along on the treadmill. i even thought, “today would be a great day for a run outside.” just plain crazy talk. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!  i’m even seeking advice and accountability from my dear friend kelli white (world championship runner). Lord have mercy.

so, stay tuned. i will go forward. tomorrow is day 3. i expect it to keep getting a little bit easier and yet a lot more challenging as i increase the intervals in which i run. for more details on the C2K program, go here. see what i’m putting myself through.

on another note, i’m pumped about getting some new cute running shoes! ping!

Going Green – Water Bottles

Hello to all you water lovers! I know it’s tempting to buy a bottle of water when you’re thirsty or when you go to the ball park, the mall, the gym, etc. Resist the urge! Go out and buy you a nice $10 Nalgene water bottle, or two or three.           nalgene           

Keep one in your car, one at the office, and one at home to take with you to the gym. Now, $10 for a water bottle is a little much but these suckers are indestructible and they come in a vast variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. Now you’ll never be thirsty because you’ll have your water bottle with you at all times. Ladies, they make small ones too that can fit in your purse.  Now, enough product promotion and on to saving the planet! About 1.5 million tons of plastic are used in the bottling of 89 billion liters of drinking water each year. That’s enough to make two water filters for every household on the planet! One billion people around the world lack access to clean drinking water. So while you’re out buying your nice new shiny water bottle, stop by Bed, Bath & Beyond or Walmart for that matter and pick you up a Pur Water Filter for your kitchen faucet.    pur                            

This will not only help give others drinking water but it will save you a bookoo of money! Bookoo = a crap load 🙂

24 Hour

jason and i joined 24 hour fitness about 3 weeks ago now and we love it! well most of the time at least. so it’s a brand new gym, opened up on dec 14th – the day we joined. it’s also about 2 blocks from our place so we can just walk there which was a major perk to join. we’ve learned from the past that having to drive more than a mile to the gym doesn’t necessarily work for us. we also decided to purchase an intro trainer package for both of us. $99 for 5 half hour sessions – not a bad deal. we’ve both done 3 sessions so far. the first one was an evaluation, the second one was arms and the last one was legs. evaluation, great… and i’m fat. arms, hard as crap… but the pain went away after a day. legs… HELL, PAIN, DEATH, SUICIDE! it’s two days now after my legs training and i’m honestly about to go to the doctor, that’s how bad they hurt. i’m not sure what they would do besides amputate but i feel like i might need a little m.d. attention. i can’t stand up or sit down without using my arms to either hold me or propel me. laying still in the bed hurts. my quads feel like rocks and bengay does nuttin! it’s misery really and i’m not exaggerating. we have 5 stairs to from the parking lot to the sidewalk that leads to our apartment. there might as well be 500! i have to go one leg at a time, holding on the hand-railing and hoping that i don’t fall. getting out of the car is interesting too. this morning, stepping into the bathtub for a hot soak was quite a feat and then sitting down was even more enjoyable! it’s just horrible. anyone have any good ideas on what to do?
